Online Classes in the Philippines During Pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic began a year ago. And so far, not only the Philippines, but all countries worldwide are still grappling with this terrible virus.

Many establishments and businesses were closed down and the unemployment rate increased. The Department of Education has established a continuity plan for the next academic year.

Although some schools did not expect that online classes would be possible. Other private schools have adjusted the system. But some parents wished to skip the school year because some cannot adapt, some don’t have internet access, some don’t have the means to pay the tuition fees and to buy the needed things but most importantly they think children probably will not learn with this kind of set-up.

Honestly, as a parent, I wished to skip the school year for my sons, but it’s my responsibility as a parent to give them the education they need even there’s a pandemic on-going. So, I decided to enroll them even though I knew it would be tough for them and for us, the parents. I know that my sons, particularly the grade schooler, will very much need my time on his online classes. Orientation is a must, because not all students are keen on using the computer. They needed to familiarize themselves with every computer function. How to make it work and go through all possible websites that will be used.

My son had trouble keeping up with the class. He is not motivated at the beginning. I noticed that sometimes he did not pay much attention and told me that he would like to see his classmates and teachers personally. He was sad because he couldn't play and talk to his classmates the way he used to. But I talked to him and explained thoroughly why all these things happen.

As for the lessons, I saw that he found it hard to read and study all the online modules. I had to print the materials for him so that he could understand their lessons correctly and properly. After his classes, I needed to teach the lessons again because he did not fully understand the lessons during their online classes.

The challenges I believe learners experienced with these distance learning are:

 1. Internet connection is the main issue. If all family members use the connection simultaneously and there is an interruption, usually during peak hours, it was hard to connect to the class. They went through a slow internet and were disconnected.

 2. Space. Not all have a big space or room to use for online classes. During this pandemic, work from home was also put in place. It's like there's a fight at home where everybody's talking at the same time.

3. Learning Materials. Students found it difficult to study without a paper handouts of the learning materials like books.  Some schools have relied on e-books and YouTube videos as resources. As a tutor, I know that students learn well if they have materials they can keep, highlight and review at any point during the day.

4. Gadget like computer, laptop and cell phone. Not everybody can afford to buy these things or even own at least one. Especially if the family has a lot of children and only have enough money to buy the things they needed to live.

5. Gadget malfunction. camera and microphone not functioning well. Sometimes this stuff happens. And it affects the concentration of the student.

6. Modules. Are not taught and delivered properly due to lack of time and difficulty in teaching during the online classes. With regard to public schools, delivery of modules was the primary problem for teachers. In particular, in rural areas where other pupils live at the top of the mountains or far away to visit. Teachers made efforts to finish, print the modules and deliver them even using their own money to buy paper, printer and transport costs to bring them to their students. (I salute all teachers out there).

But unfortunately they are times that to be able to meet the deadline for submission, parents tend to be the one who answers their children's modules.

7. Eye Problem Due to Online Classes – just as adults, kids can experience the headaches, blurred vision and dry eyes associated with staring at laptops or tablets for long periods, such as a full school day.  The student experienced and complaints of eye fatigue during an online course with the increase in screen time and the number of asynchronous tasks assigned to them.

It was really tough at first, but we learned to adapt and accept that this is the new norm. We have to be flexible and strong on behalf of our family.

Another school year has come to an end and another academic year is about to start. Some schools are holding registrations and preparing for further distance learning.

That said, it is my hope that the process will be better organized and better planned. And the schools and teachers will continue to be more sympathetic to the submission of tasks and the situation of the family. And finally, to establish flexibility in terms of payment of the tuition fees.

And I pray continually that this pandemic will soon end for the good of all, not just of my country, but of the entire world.

Stay Safe!

The Things We Have During This Pandemic

The world was taken aback by the advent of COVID-19. Initially, people thought it was just a severe flu. So not everybody was paying attention or taking that seriously.

And we're lucky, the Philippines had no cases in November 2019 I think. However, many Filipinos work all over the world as nurses, sailors, helpers, professionals, and others. And of course, they will be back to Philippines when their contract ended and for vacation to see and visit their loved ones here, some of them even brought friends, new husband and others.

On that note, I believe that in December 2019, the Department of Health began screening for COVID-19 and contracted screening of all incoming passengers. So, in short, the Philippines had a case of COVID-19 and it exploded now to a million cases.

As a mother, I have a responsibility to protect the safety of my family. Fortunately, the school year was almost over and the children will definitely remain at home. Home-based work has started. And the lockdown has been put into place. People are locked up in the home, they can only go out to get what they need. The "Ayudas" food packages and money were distributed at each barangay (we received none of these aids, OK lang). Social distancing has been put into place, masks and face shields are mandatory.

To stay healthy and to help us avoid being sick. I've prepared all of these during this pandemic.

1. Face Mask

In the early stages of the pandemic, all the masks were sold out. It was really difficult to find where to purchase or preorder. Unfortunately, the Philippines was in the midst of the Mount Taal eruption as well. In January 2020, masks were needed then due to falling ashes that reached the neighboring provinces and even here in Manila. I tried to find a seller through on-line and groceries. And the cost was exceedingly high. That is why now I hoarded😊

They said N95 is the best mask to protect us, but due to limited supply we just bought this three layers masks that will protect us.

2. Alcohol

Same thing with the mask, this product was surely impossible to find during this lockdown. And the stores have only limited buyers to buy 2 bottles per person. Now, I got gallons of alcohol.

3. Face Shield

Prior to that, the only mask was needed, but the government also introduced a face shield. The study also found that it can protect us from COVID-19.

4. Portable Infrared Temperature Checker

We had the habit of checking our temperature every 4-8 hours a day. It is handy because we can monitor our temperature if we want to.

5. Blood Pressure Monitor

It's a must for me because I have to keep an eye on my blood pressure every day. This pandemic brings to light the stress, anxiety and depression that I feel. And for this, sometimes or most of the time, my blood pressure hahaha is elevated.

6. Pulse Oximeter

This small device measures the saturation of oxygen carried in your red blood cells. This Pulse oximeter is super useful for our home monitoring of supplemental oxygen, or if one of us will be diagnosed with COVID-19. It helps to keep or watch over our health and to know if we need medical care. This is the reason why it is a must have in this period.

7. Vitamins and Supplement

Because we can't go out like we used to, we don't have enough vitamin D to keep us from falling ill. We take this D3 2000 iu everyday which promotes overall immune health.

For my eldest son, he takes the Super C, a full vitamin to protect him as well.

8. Air Purifier

The focus of this work is to clean the air, which may include pollutants, allergens and toxins during this pandemic.

9. Lysol Disinfectant

Whenever we received something from the grocery store or Shopee or Lazada delivery. We ensure to sanitize it first before opening and use. It was designed to provide protection against germs and can kill bacteria in order to enter our home. There'll be less viruses or germs.

10. Bactidol and Lagundi Tea or Honey Lemon Throat Comfort

These two protect our throats from sore throat sprouts before it gets worse with a cough, cold or flu. "Agap Agad sabi nga"!

If I suspect that one of us is going to be coughing soon, I will immediately tell them to gargle with it. For the tea, we take it every other day before bedtime.

11. Honey and VCO

We take honey every day, my sons take it before going to bedtime and after their vitamins. Honey is a good antioxidant and can soothe a sore throat. It also fights infections and heals wounds. It helps relieve constipation and improves digestion, which can further aid weight loss.

When it comes to virgin coconut oil, it helps to improve blood circulation, lubricates our internal organs, joints and bones, improve the quality of sleep. I mean, it's good for our body.

12. Super Scent Oil

When we experience body pain like stiff neck and muscle joint pain after training or exercise. It is super scent, the smell with help you relax and have a good night's sleep.

That is, I think I have enumerated many of them. This post didn't tell you to have the whole thing. I am simply sharing with you the products and machines I have acquired to help us be healthy during this pandemic.

I hope you have the same experiences and sentiments as I do. We are the only one who can help ourselves.

Keep yourself and your family healthy. We can fight off COVID-19. All we have to do is follow the guidance of the government. Be patient, understanding, helpful, caring and always have FAITH, BELIEVE HIM at all times.

Please be safe!

How to Apply for a Quick Renewal of NBI Clearance

Oh pandemic, when are you going to get out of here?

In the context of the COVID-19 outbreak, people cannot go anywhere. And it also prevents us from processing important documents like our NBI clearances. But luckily right now we have a technology to do all our things through online. I believe online application is a better option, so we can be safe and we can apply in the comfort of our own home.

With that, I'll give you a simple guide on how to apply for a quick renewal of your NBI clearances. However, this guide is only applicable to those who are not in a hurry to get their clearances. If you need it as soon as possible I suggest you make an appointment and visit your preferred NBI Satellite offices nationwide.

If you have your expired NBI Clearance, kindly prepare it as you will need the NBI ID no.

 Step 1: Visit https://clearance.nbi.gov.ph/

Step 2: Fill-up all the details here:

Step 3: After checking every details you entered. This window will pop up.

You can choose which payment method you would like to make.

Once you have selected your preferred payment method, you will receive/see your NBI reference number.

You will also receive a SMS to confirm your reference number and the amount payable.

Kindly take down note the reference number if you choose to pay it later.

As for me I chose G cash:

     1. Log in to G cash account

     2. Choose Bills Payment

     3. Choose Government

     4. Then click NBI, this window will be open. Just type in your Reference Number, contact no. and amount.

For G cash payment, it will be Php130.00 plus 40 for G cash service fee, total of Php170.00 for your NBI Clearance.

     5. Then click NEXT, don’t forget to take a screen shot of your payment transaction, in case you need a proof or for follow up of status.

Step 4: Pick-up or Door-to-door delivery

After you save your reference number for NBI clearance or after paying. You can now proceed on how to get or receive your clearance.

There are two ways to get it:

1. By pick-up, click pick-up button and download the instructions how to pick-up your clearance.

2. By door-to-door delivery
(if you badly need your NBI clearance as soon as possible, this is not for you).

This will take a week or so before it will deliver to your house.

Fill-up the delivery address then click proceed.

Step 5: Payment of the Delivery.

1. After clicking the proceed button. You will be choosing again the payment method you wish to use in paying.

2. Choose one and copy again the REFERENCE NUMBER for paying.

3. Pay the exact amount which I think Php207. Php200 for the delivery charge and 7.00 for service charge.

4. Take a screen shot of your payment transaction.

Step 6: Confirmation and Follow-up

1. After 1-2 days you may send a message to 0915-0656899

Type in: your 10 alphanumeric Ref Number space NBI

Wait for the response if your NBI Clearance is ready for pick up.

For Pick-up: proceed to NBI UN Office

For Delivery: Kindly wait for the text of Delivery Box

2. You may also send email to: nbivalidationdelivery@gmail.com

3. The Delivery Box will send you a SMS if they will be on the way to your place for delivery.

And for my part, I paid Php170 for my NBI clearance through Gcash and Php207 for door-to-door delivery through Gcash also. That's a total of Php377. In the convenient of my home. No worries and in safety.

I hope this guide can help you in applying for a renewal of your NBI Clearance.

Stay Safe EVERYONE!
